Kieron van Wyk Ties for 4th Place at PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open, Earns Spot at Valspar Championship
College of Charleston’s Kieron van Wyk continues to prove he belongs on the national stage, and his latest performance at the Puerto Rico Open is just the latest example. The Cougars’ standout tied for 4th place with a scorching -19, putting together rounds of 66, 68, 65, and 70 in one of the best showings of his career.
For four days, van Wyk showed why he’s one of the most exciting young golfers in the country. He was dialed in from start to finish, highlighted by a clutch eagle on the par-5 14th that kept him within striking distance of the lead heading into Sunday. At one point, he was just one shot off the top spot, going toe-to-toe with seasoned pros.
His stellar play also secured him a spot on the Haskins Award watchlist, an honor given to the best collegiate golfer in the nation. That’s elite company. Past winners have gone on to win 33 majors and rack up over 400 professional tour victories. Being in that conversation only reinforces what many already know: Kieron van Wyk is a star in the making.
But this is just the latest chapter in what’s shaping up to be a special year. Back in January, van Wyk made history at Torrey Pines, capturing his first amateur win at the Farmers Insurance Invitational. He became the first APGA golfer to take the title since the tournament’s inception in 2010, further cementing his place as the top-ranked player in the Bridgestone APGA Collegiate Rankings.
In the college ranks, he’s already a two-time CAA Champion and two-time CAA Golfer of the Year, making him one of the most decorated players in Charleston history. And now, thanks to his showing in Puerto Rico, he’s earned a spot in the Valspar Championship—a full-fledged PGA Tour event at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course, running from March 17-23.
That means van Wyk won’t just be competing against the best in college golf—he’ll be taking on some of the best in the world. And if his recent play is any indication, he’s more than ready for the challenge.
With each passing tournament, Kieron van Wyk is proving that he’s built for the next level. Charleston fans have been watching his rise—now, the golf world is starting to take notice.
