How ‘Bout Them Cougs?
With Thursday’s win, the Cougars locked up the double bye and will play Sunday at 8:30 p.m.
It’s been a minute since I’ve said those words about our Charleston Basketball team, but if any two-game stretch this season deserved it, it was this past week! The Cougars roared to two big victories against Delaware and Campbell, and they look to be peaking at just the right time.
Wins are always great, especially in front of the home crowd and on Senior Night, but that was fun basketball to watch. The Cougars are playing their best ball right now, and the Charleston faithful showed up in style like we hoped for.
Thursday night, the Cougs took down Delaware 94-84 in an offensive shootout. As we predicted in our previous article, the Blue Hens lived up to their high-powered offensive reputation but struggled to stop Charleston on the other end. Ante Brzovic was dominant, finishing with 27 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists, while CJ Fulton put on a point guard masterclass with 20 points and 10 assists.
Charleston used a 15-0 run to take a 35-21 lead in the first half and went into the break up 43-34. While Delaware fought back in the second half, cutting the lead to just two points at one point, the Cougars never looked shaken. When it came down to “Winning Time”—the last four minutes of the game—this team showed the championship grit that fans have been yearning for.
The Cougs locked in defensively, forcing two key turnovers and contesting every shot down the final stretch. On offense, they executed beautifully, getting high-quality shots while keeping the pressure on Delaware. Free throws were a struggle at times, but when it mattered most, the team knocked down eight straight to close out the game. I was also impressed by their ability to get to the line 30 times, showing aggressiveness on offense and a willingness to embrace contact. This team showed championship potential and played winning basketball when it mattered.
The Cougars followed up Thursday with an even better performance Saturday night, taking down Campbell 87-65 in front of a raucous TD Arena crowd. The victory was never in question, as the Cougs jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.
Derrin Boyd had one of his best games in maroon and white, scoring 25 points on 9-15 shooting, including a ridiculous 7-11 from three. Charleston’s defense set the tone again, holding Campbell to 38% shooting while forcing 14 turnovers and racking up 10 steals.
But the biggest stat of the night? 24 assists. That’s a sign of a well-oiled offensive machine, and if the Cougars can bottle up these two performances for the CAA Tournament, they’re going to be a tough out for anyone.
With Thursday’s win, the Cougars locked up the double bye and will play Sunday at 8:30 p.m.. After Saturday’s win and William & Mary’s loss, Charleston secured the No. 3 seed in the CAA Tournament.
Charleston will face the winner of Monmouth vs. NC A&T/Hofstra on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. (FloSports).
We’ll have a full CAA Tournament scouting report and prediction article, plus a podcast later this week. But in the meantime, get ready for March Madness—because if this past week was any indication, the Cougars are ready to make a run.
