The College of Charleston had an explosive start to their conference play, sweeping Hampton over the weekend in dominant fashion. The Cougars outscored their opponent 23-4 across the three games, showcasing their offensive firepower and defensive dominance.
Charleston set the tone for the weekend in Friday’s opener with a well-rounded performance. The Cougars jumped out early, plating four runs in the first inning and never looking back. Jay Wrightsman was electric at the plate and on the basepaths, going 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Leela Langston and Austy Miller each drove in two runs, while Karlee Hughes added an RBI double to extend the lead. In the circle, Alyssa Archambault delivered a strong outing, striking out five and allowing just two earned runs over five innings. Ryley Kutter closed out the final two innings in dominant fashion, retiring all six batters she faced. Charleston took the series opener with a convincing 6-2 victory.
In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Charleston’s offense was relentless. The Cougars piled up 13 hits and scored in every inning except one, putting constant pressure on Hampton’s defense. Karlee Hughes and Jay Wrightsman were the standout performers. Hughes had three hits with 2 RBIs, providing a spark at the plate, while Wrightsman contributed with two hits, two stolen bases, and three runs scored, showcasing her versatility. Mackenzie Mathis delivered a masterful performance in the circle, pitching a complete game and striking out six while allowing just two runs. The Cougars cruised to a 10-2 victory, leaving no doubt about who controlled the game.
Charleston was dominant again in the series finale. Hughes proved to be a force, recording another three-hit game, stealing three bases, and crossing the plate three times. Austy Miller also had a standout performance, with three hits and an RBI triple, providing a key offensive spark. Leela Langston contributed with 2 RBIs, rounding out the offensive assault. Ryley Kutter pitched a complete game and struck out four while allowing just one run. Charleston wrapped up the sweep with a commanding 7-1 victory.
