The College of Charleston women’s basketball team is rewriting the record books—and they’re not done yet.
The Cougars rolled past Howard Monday night with a dominant 76–56 win in the second round of the WNIT, earning the program’s first-ever postseason home victory since joining Division I and punching their ticket to the Super 16. It’s the team’s 25th win of the season, extending what has already been the most successful campaign in school history.
It didn’t take long for the Cougars to make a statement.
Taryn Barbot opened the scoring with a three-pointer that pushed her past the 1,000-point career mark, making her the first sophomore in program history to reach that milestone—and the fastest ever in CofC history, men’s or women’s. That bucket sparked a 19–8 first-quarter surge, and Charleston never looked back.
Charleston’s full-court pressure once again proved overwhelming. The Cougars racked up 14 steals, forced 19 turnovers, and converted those mistakes into 24 points, dictating tempo and keeping the Bison on their heels from start to finish.
Taryn Barbot led all scorers with 19 points, adding six rebounds and three steals in another well-rounded performance. She was one of four Cougars in double figures.
Taylor Barbot came close to a triple-double, finishing with 15 points, 11 assists, and 7 rebounds, controlling the floor with poise and pushing the pace in transition. Lara Rohkohl logged her tenth double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 boards, and McKinley Brooks-Sumpter continued her postseason surge with 16 points and eight rebounds, finding her rhythm in the midrange and on the glass.
Charleston was flawless from the line, hitting 17-of-17 free throws, and controlled the rebounding battle with a 47–38 edge.
This was more than just another win. It was a statement of intent.
From the opening tip to the final buzzer, the Cougars played with purpose, poise, and an unmistakable edge. It’s the style of basketball that’s come to define this team—fast, physical, and fun—and now it has them just three wins away from a WNIT title.
Up next: a third-round showdown with Rutgers out of the Big Ten. The Cougars will travel north for a Thursday night matchup at 7 PM, with a spot in the WNIT quarterfinals on the line.
Coach Robin Harmony’s Cougars are no longer just a feel-good story. They’re a legit contender. And they’ve still got more to prove.
