Charleston Women’s Hoops Makes History: Record-Breaking Season Sets the Tone for the Future
The Charleston Cougars women’s basketball team just wrapped up one of the most remarkable seasons in program history — and it feels like just the beginning.
Under the steady leadership of Head Coach Robin Harmony, the Cougars shattered records and expectations, finishing with a program-best 25 wins and a 14-4 mark in conference play. Charleston played with pace and purpose all year, averaging 74.7 points per game while holding opponents to just 57.8. That +16.9 scoring margin? Best in the CAA. And it wasn’t just about putting the ball in the basket — the Cougars outperformed opponents in rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks, showing off a complete, well-coached squad that knew how to win.
Leading the charge was Taryn Barbot — and her season was one for the history books. Barbot became the first College of Charleston player ever to earn CAA Player of the Year honors, and she did it with style: 17.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game, all while locking up defensively enough to land on the All-CAA Defensive Team. Her four 30-point performances this year were a masterclass in shot-making, and she capped it all off by scoring her 1,000th career point in the Cougars’ NIT win over Howard. From CAA Rookie of the Year to the league’s top player — Taryn’s ascent has been nothing short of legendary.
But this team wasn’t a one-woman show.
Forward Lara Rohkohl was a force in the paint, leading the team with 9.2 boards and 1.9 blocks per game. And in the backcourt, Taryn’s sister, Taylor Barbot, ran the show with a team-best 5.0 assists per contest, setting the table for Charleston’s high-octane offense.
Sure, the season didn’t end with a trophy, but make no mistake: the bar has been raised. The best record in program history and a Super 16 appearance in the WNIT capped off a historic season for the Cougs, but they’re not done.
Charleston women’s basketball is no longer flying under the radar. This program is built to contend — not just in the CAA, but in the postseason. With Harmony at the helm and a core of returning talent, the Cougars head into 2025-26 with serious momentum and even loftier expectations.
There’s something special brewing on the court on George Street these days. And Cougar Nation, get ready, because this ride is just getting started.
